Hello and welcome,
Cropwell Community Garden
is a developing agroecological community garden project in the village of Cropwell Butler.
The garden has been built in collaboration with The Plough Inn, Honeybee Farmacy CIC, 9th West Bridgford Scout Group, and residents of Cropwell Butler and Cropwell Bishop. Our aim has been to turn what was once known as ‘ the dumping ground’ into a space to grow local produce, and for our rural community to engage in horticultural activities and village events.

About the garden
Cropwell Community Garden is situated at the heart of our small village, Cropwell Butler in the Vale of Belvoir (Nottinghamshire), on land owned by The Plough Inn. In 2022, former landlord Tony came across the piece of overgrown and abandoned land behind a fence.
Work began by clearing the site of garden waste, litter, bonfire piles, and broken glass. Brambles and invasive plants were also removed. The whole garden was very uneven, covered in piles of earth and waste. In line with our regenerative ethos, no heavy machinery has been used and the site levelled by hand. The garden is now open regularly, and we are in the process of completing landscaping and infrastructure.
All materials used so far have been recycled or repurposed. The garden has been developed and maintained using no-dig and agroecological principles to support residents, biodiversity, and soil health. Growing fruit, vegetables, and flowers without the use of pesticides or chemicals, whilst increasing soil fertility, helps us grow nutrient dense produce and a healthy garden.
Local non profit organisation Honeybee Farmacy CIC lead the clearing and landscaping work, alongside day to day management and operations of the project. We are extremely grateful for the support from our funders Rushcliffe Borough Council and The National Lottery Community Fund.
